F or the past few years, frontier AI has referred almost exclusively to the model layer – the largest, most capable systems produced by labs such as OpenAI, Anthropic and Google DeepMind, distinguished by scale, generality and the pace at which their capabilities have advanced. Each new generation has pushed further into reasoning, coding and autonomous agentic behaviour, closing the gap between what a model can theoretically do and what it can be trusted to do on an unsupervised basis.
That gap has, however, proven to be the real story of 2026. Enterprises have struggled to turn frontier models into working systems that integrate with legacy infrastructure, respect governance requirements and deliver measurable business outcomes. Cognizant frames this as an“ AI outcome gap” worth an estimated US $ 4.5tn, arguing it is fundamentally a people and process problem rather than one of compute or infrastructure.
This has given frontier AI a second, quieter meaning. It now describes not
