While Earth’ s climate has changed throughout history, the current warming is happening at a rate not seen in the past 10,000 years, according to NASA. Climate change is already having visible and clear effects on the world. The UK’ s Met Office warns that these temperature shifts threaten water supplies, risk coastal flooding and disrupt marine ecosystems.
Amid these growing threats, predictive analytics, defined by Harvard Business School as the use of data to predict future trends and events, is transforming business, both in corporate sustainability and how enterprises plan responses to the crisis. Predictive analytics uses historical data to forecast potential scenarios that can help drive strategic decisions.
Many traditional ESG measures have often been reactive and focused on backwards-looking metrics, such as reporting on emissions after the fact. With AI, the focus is shifting to predictive and preventative environmental impacts.
Speaking earlier this year at Sustainability LIVE @ London Climate Action Week, Sophie Graham, Chief Sustainability Officer at IFS, said:“ When I get excited about AI, it’ s because it’ s great at managing huge amounts of data and turning that into insights, and it’ s also great at predicting.”
