AI INFRASTRUCTURE

“THE PROJECT AT QUEEN MARY DEMONSTRATES HOW DIGITAL INFRASTRUCTURE CAN BE A CATALYST FOR NET ZERO”

Mark Yeeles, Vice President, Secure Power Division, Schneider Electric
The old facility was a classic example of legacy infrastructure trying to cope with modern demands.
Built for a less energy-intensive era of computing, it couldn’ t handle the power requirements of today’ s AI workloads while simultaneously doing anything useful with all that waste heat.
The cooling systems were working overtime just to keep equipment from overheating, with all that thermal energy simply blown into the London air.
Advanced Power Technology, the specialist integrator that made this technical marriage work, had to essentially build a bridge between two different worlds.
On one side, there is high-performance computing( HPC) infrastructure that needs to stay cool enough to function reliably. On the other, there is a university campus with buildings that need heating and hot water.
“ Schneider Electric’ s EcoStruxure Data Centre solutions were essential to help Queen Mary bring together its power, cooling, racks and management systems and support the deployment of its high-density IT equipment needed for its research,” says John Andrew, who manages technical sales at Advanced Power Technology.
The beauty of the system lies in how it handles the unpredictability of both computing workloads and heating demands. aimagazine. com 137
