INFRASTRUCTURE

McKinsey notes that the world of AI and ML is undergoing a generational transformation, from an idea studied by scientists to a tool used by all kinds of people for all kinds of tasks. At the heart of this shift is deep learning, which the consulting giant calls“ the next evolutionary step” of AI and ML. It is an AI method that teaches computers to process data in a way inspired by the human brain. Deep learning models can recognise complex pictures, text, sounds and other data patterns to produce accurate insights and predictions. The infrastructure needed to build, train and run deep neural networks is a specialised collection of hardware, software, networking and storage systems.

Colm MacCárthaigh is Vice President and Distinguished Engineer at AWS, where he focuses on EC2( Elastic Compute Cloud) and the infrastructure that underpins it. He joined AWS in 2008 to work on high-scale systems and security, and he’ s spent the years since working across cloud, network and data centre infrastructure— most recently leading the design and delivery of the AWS European Sovereign Cloud.
Cormac Bonner is AI Program Director at Hexagon. His focus is on turning advances in AI into practical solutions to real-world customer problems.
“ A big part of my role is identifying where AI can make a meaningful difference, then bringing together the right expertise across the business to turn those opportunities into reality,”
he explains. Cormac also works to foster a culture of experimentation and collaboration, helping teams explore new ideas while staying focused on where AI can deliver genuine value.
Hexagon and AWS are close partners, having collaborated on initiatives as diverse as an“ AI-powered” FinOps tool and automated manufacturing standard operating procedures.
