APPLICATIONS
“ AI can supercharge that,” he explains,“ but only if you can cut across the different silos of your organisation and they need to come together more effectively. This is what we are seeing, and it’ s what we did at Extreme.
“ We didn’ t start with internal efficiencies – we started by thinking about what we could build for our customers to create better outcomes, allowing vendors or providers to differentiate themselves in the marketplace.”
Chasing cost savings alone, Markus warns, is ultimately a“ race to the bottom”.
The cost of getting AI wrong One of the more notable findings to emerge from early corporate use of AI agents is that they can end up being more expensive than the human employees they were meant to replace.
Frontier AI labs – those building the most advanced LLMs, such as OpenAI and Anthropic – have been pricing their services below cost to win market share.
Markus says that is now changing:“ They’ re all burning money, so to speak, and at some point they need to make money. That will come partly from economies of scale, but also from raising prices. Licence models are changing, features move from one tier to another, and things get more expensive.”
For firms using AI purely to automate repetitive tasks, that shifting cost base is a serious risk.
