AI IN SUSTAINABILITY
The observatory has been developed and will be maintained by the IEA, with data and insights from its energy industry and tech sector partners – including maps of global data centre capacity and power use, plus a host of case studies outlining different AI use models.

The tech giants achieving AI sustainability efforts Google and IBM have jumped at the chance to demonstrate how AI can actually help solve energy challenges, not just create them.
Kate Brandt, Google’ s Chief Sustainability Officer, explains why this observatory matters so much:“ The International Energy Agency’ s new, first-of-its-kind Energy and AI Observatory creates a single, comprehensive reference, gathering crucial data and providing a global, informed vision on the impact of AI on the energy sector.”
Additionally, Google has contributed two projects that show AI’ s potential upside.
Its MethaneSAT satellite partnership with the Environmental Defense Fund uses AI to detect methane leaks from oil and gas operations with unprecedented accuracy.
Meanwhile, its Tapestry project is helping Chile’ s national grid operator plan for carbon neutrality by 2050.“ Google’ s partnering with the Environmental Defense Fund on a new satellite, MethaneSAT, which can detect methane emissions from oil and gas production more accurately and precisely than ever before,” Kate says.
