When OpenAI’ s CEO Sam Altman stepped onto the White House stage alongside Oracle ' s Larry Ellison and SoftBank ' s Masayoshi Son at the start of 2025, they weren ' t just announcing another tech partnership.

Stargate, their US $ 500bn AI infrastructure venture, has since evolved from a domestic American project into a global network spanning three continents in less than eight months.

The scale becomes clear when considering the numbers: 4.5 gigawatts of additional power capacity through Oracle alone, enough to support over two million AI-focused chips.

In all, the project is one quarter of current operational data centre capacity across the US.
