AI APPLICATIONS
JOHN DEERE: SOWING THE SEEDS OF AI

John Deere is proving that image recognition’ s most profound impact may be in our oldest industries. Its See & Spray technology is a rugged, real-world AI system designed to work on a 120-foot-wide sprayer moving through a field at 12 miles per hour.

Thirty-six cameras scan over 2,000 square feet per second, feeding data to onboard Nvidia processors, before a deep learning algorithm makes a simple decision for each plant in milliseconds: crop or weed?
If it’ s a weed, a specific nozzle activates and delivers a precise dose of herbicide. This remarkable precision eliminates wasteful, broadcast spraying, directly benefiting both the farmer’ s balance sheet and the surrounding environment. It is AI applied with a clear and immediate purpose.
As Jahmy Hindman, CTO at John Deere, says:“ The technology is so precise that we can reduce the amount of herbicide by 77 % on average. That is a massive benefit... It’ s a great example of technology that has both economic and sustainability benefits.”
