Ren decided to establish Huawei with a capital of CNY21,000 in 1987( roughly US $ 6000 at the time). He became CEO of Huawei in 1988 and has occupied the role ever since. Born in 1944, with a career spanning the Chinese military’ s engineering corps, Ren has overseen Huawei’ s growth into one of China’ s largest companies spanning telecoms and consumer electronics. He is now increasingly ramping up its involvement in cloud and AI, and the company has been building a self-reliant, full-stack AI ecosystem.
