Disney and Universal’ s lawsuit against Midjourney Disney and Universal filed the first major Hollywood lawsuit against an AI company on 11 June, suing image generator Midjourney for copyright infringement in Los Angeles federal court.
The lawsuit claims Midjourney pirated the libraries of the two Hollywood studios to generate and distribute“ endless unauthorised copies” of their famed characters, such as Darth Vader from the Star Wars franchise and the Minions from Despicable Me.
The suit alleges Midjourney used the studio’ s works to train its image service and generate reproductions of their copyrighted characters.
Midjourney, founded in 2021 by CEO David Holz, monetises the service through paid subscriptions and generated US $ 300m in revenue last year, Disney and Universal say.
